Updated Core Competencies Book Available
The 2025 edition of Core Competencies for the Practice of Industrial/Occupational Hygiene is now available in the AIHA Marketplace. The new edition highlights the importance of a strong technical background and functional skills for diverse occupations. It also serves as a guide for students, academic programs, employers, and individual practitioners to understand, develop, and enhance IH/OH competencies.
The Core Competencies book was originally published in 2012 with contributions from ACGIH and the American Board of Industrial Hygiene, now the Board for Global EHS Credentialing. A first revision was completed in 2018. The current edition builds on the technical and functional proficiencies included in previous versions. It also adds two technical competencies, Total Worker Health and vibration, as well as three functional competencies, business literacy, emotional intelligence, and confidentiality.
The new edition can be purchased via the AIHA website.
AIHA Releases “Future of OEHS 2025” Report
Based on a survey of AIHA members, affiliated universities, and partner associations, AIHA’s “Future of OEHS 2025” report identifies trends and challenges in OEHS hiring, training, retention, and recruitment. The results reveal key insights on the current state of and future demand for the OEHS industry in the United States.
The report builds off a study commissioned by NIOSH in 2011, which forecast that demand for OEHS services would far exceed the number of professionals qualified to provide them. The AIHA survey, conducted in 2024, found that more than half of companies who responded indicated that they have definite plans to hire OEHS professionals in the next three years.
AIHA’s report indicates that OEHS professionals identify a need for training in communication skills for advocating health and safety, artificial intelligence applications in health and safety, and in managing chemical hazards.
The report is available from the AIHA website.
