SAMPLING FOR SARS-COV-2
PCR VERSUS CULTURING
Environmental sampling is used to evaluate hazard controls. There is still no consensus on the infectious dose of SARS-CoV-2 other than a vague directive that fifteen minutes of exposure to an infected person is sufficient to cause infection in a susceptible individual. Determining if a control is “good enough” is therefore difficult. Nonetheless, there is still much value in knowing the level of risk reduction provided by certain control measures and policies.

THE LONE LAB WORKER
BEST PRACTICES FOR PROTECTING RESEARCHERS
Working alone increases both the likelihood of an accident and the severity of an adverse outcome. In the world of laboratory research, it is the organization’s responsibility to ensure adequate controls are in place to protect researchers and reduce the risks associated with working alone.

MANAGING REPRODUCTIVE AND DEVELOPMENTAL HAZARDS
ELEMENTS OF A SUCCESSFUL WORKPLACE PROGRAM
Although they receive relatively little attention, hazards that affect human reproductive systems and development can be devastating and should be managed with great care and sensitivity. These hazards are present in many workplaces but are of particular concern in laboratories, where the number of chemicals in use can far exceed that in other occupational environments.
