1-Bromopropane Among Substances Added to Report on Carcinogens
Four new substances have been added to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Report on Carcinogens, available at http://bit.ly/roc13. Cumene, 1-bromopropane, and pentachlorophenol and by-products of its synthesis are now listed as “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen,” while ortho-Toluidine has been reevaluated and reclassified as “known to be a human carcinogen.”
1-Bromopropane is used as a cleaning solvent and spray adhesive. Cumene is used to make phenol and acetone, and is found in fuel products and tobacco smoke. Pentachlorophenol is a wood preservative mixture used to treat utility poles. And ortho-Toluidine is used to make rubber chemicals, pesticides, dyes, and medical and consumer products.
The Report on Carcinogens identifies and classifies agents, substances, mixtures, and exposures that are considered cancer hazards for people living in the U.S. The recently published 13th Report on Carcinogens includes these four new chemicals and a total of 243 substances, each with a detailed description.
