OSHA Issues Publication on Protecting Roofing Workers​​
OSHA has released new guidance for protecting workers on roofing jobs. The publication covers safe practices to prevent falls, other physical injuries, hazardous substance exposures, and injuries and illnesses related to environmental conditions. Topics suc​h as electrical safety; roofing tool safety; integrity of older buildings; emergency action plans; and use of personal fall arrest systems, fall restraint systems, and guardrail systems are also included. ​ According to OSHA, falls accounted for more than 3,500 fatalities in the construction industry between 2003 and 2013, with more than 30 percent of those deaths caused by falls from roofs. OSHA also recently updated its Fall Protection in Construction publication, which is intended to help workers and employers understand the agency’s Fall Protection in Construction standard requirements and the criteria for fall protection in construction workplaces.
