OSHA Considers Strategies for Updating the PELs

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS

OSHA is considering issues related to updating its permissible exposure limits (PELs) as part of the agency’s review of its overall approach to managing occupational exposures to chemicals. In a request for information (RFI) published Oct. 10, OSHA seeks public comment regarding current practices and future methods for updating the PELs and new strategies for protecting workers from chemical exposures. The agency specifically requests suggestions related to streamlined approaches for risk assessment and feasibility analyses and alternative approaches for managing chemical exposures, including control banding, task-based approaches, and informed substitution.

“Updating the PELs has been, and remains, the number one public policy issue for our members,” said AIHA® President-elect Daniel H. Anna, PhD, CIH, CSP. “The publication of this RFI marks a step forward for AIHA and other stakeholders who have long pushed for this update.”
