In early November, AIHA Vice President Steven E. Lacey, PhD, CIH, CSP, and AIHA Managing Director of Scientific and Technical Initiatives, Mary Ann Latko, CAE, CIH, CSP, QEP, participated in the 20th Annual Occupational Health Week Conference in Medellin, Colombia. The conference drew 1,600 registrants, with over 900 attendees enrolled in pre-conference professional development courses. Speakers at the conference included industrial hygienists from Colombia, Mexico, Chile, Panama, Ecuador, Venezuela, Brazil, and several other Latin American countries.
“This is the largest occupational hygiene conference in Latin America,” Latko said. “It was an exceptional opportunity to meet with many of the leaders of the Latin American IH associations at one location. They are extremely committed to furthering the IH profession in Latin America and working with us to develop resources for IH practitioners. The debut of the Spanish version of the current ACGIH TLV/BEI book is one example of their high level of collaboration.”
“Visiting the Colombian IH conference made clear to me the impact of AIHA reference texts and other education resources in various corners of the world,” Lacey said. “Language translation would permit access to these resources, and this access could be transformative for protecting worker health in Latin America.”
While in Colombia, AIHA representatives also participated in a Latin American summit on vibration, an invitation-only event that is helping to shape regulation on vibration in Colombia. The summit attracted 150 participants from academia, industry, occupational medicine, labor organizations, and government agencies such as NIOSH.
