AIHA VOLUNTEER GROUPS NAMED AWARDS
Lila Albin Award Since 1997, the AIHA Indoor Environmental Quality Committee has recognized a peer reviewed article in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health. The article must: (a) provide practical information and expand the knowledge base of IEQ professionals; (b) address a critical IEQ issue; and (c) present the topic clearly and engagingly. The award goes to Jeff Wagner, Tamara L. Sparks, Shelly Miller, Wenhao Chen, Janet M. Macher, and Jed M. Waldman for the article, Modeling the Impacts of Physical Distancing and Other Exposure Determinants on Aerosol Transmission, published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene, volume 18, 2021, issue 10-11, pages 405-509, published online 13 September 2021.

Birkner Leadership Award The AIHA Leadership and Management Committee presents this award to honor the legacy of Ruth McIntyre-Birkner and Larry Birkner and is proudly awarded to an individual exemplifying extraordinary leadership and management. This year’s recipient is Bernard Fontaine, Jr., CIH, CSP, FAIHA.

Rachel Carson Award The AIHA Environmental Issues Committee awards this honor in recognition of their environmental advocacy in the spirit of Rachel Carson. This award is bestowed upon an environmental health and safety (EH&S) professional who has attained outstanding success and distinction in their environmental and industrial health and safety business, profession, or life’s work. This year’s recipient is Timothy Paz, CIH.

Chaffin Award By encouraging conference participation and recognizing excellence in the field of ergonomics, the AIHA Ergonomics Committee presents the Chaffin Award to the best ergonomic-related technical session at AIHce EXP. Established in 2008, the award honors Dr. Donald B. Chaffin’s many contributions to the field of ergonomics and to AIHA. This year’s recipient is Ryan Butler, CIH, CSP for Whole-Body Vibration Exposure Onboard Coast Guard Small Boats.

Fellows SIG Mid-Year Career Award The Fellows SIG awards the Fellows SIG Mid-Year Career Professionals Award to recognize an industrial hygienist with 10 to 25 years of industrial hygiene work experience who exhibits outstanding leadership and/or technical capabilities, has worked as a volunteer for AIHA committees, project task forces and/or SIGs, and has exhibited a commitment to contribute to the industrial hygiene profession throughout their career. This year’s recipient is Michael D. Larranaga, PhD, CIH, PE, FAIHA.

Rochelle Crew Memorial Award This award is given by the AIHA Construction Committee to honor the memory of Rochelle Crew, a long-time construction safety PDC presenter and former member of the committee. The award is given to the best construction-related paper, technical session, or PDC presentation at the previous year’s AIHce. This year’s recipient is Anthony Oliveri, CIH for Lessons Learned From Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluations (FACE) Investigations in Michigan.
H. Kenneth Dillon Memorial Award This award is presented by the AIHA Biosafety and Environmental Microbiology Committee to honor the memory of Dr. Ken Dillon, a former AIHA Fellow and the principal instructor for several years of the popular PDC, Prevention, Determination, and Remediation of Biological Contamination in Indoor Environments. The award is given to the recipient of the best student poster on biosafety or microbiology at AIHce EXP.
Cannabis Industry Health and Safety Best Student Poster This award is presented by the AIHA Cannabis Industry Health and Safety Committee to the best student poster at AIHce that focuses on the OEHS aspects of this industry.
Health and Safety Virtual Exhibit of the Year Award The Health and Safety Virtual Exhibit of the Year Award acknowledges the power of an instructive, visually appealing, virtual exhibit to tell a story about occupational and environmental health and safety issues. Through this award, the AIHA Museum and Cultural Heritage Working Group seeks to encourage others to identify or develop other health and safety-related virtual exhibits. This year’s recipient is Cornell University School of Industrial Labor and Relations for their compelling exhibit “The 1911 Triangle Factory Fire”.

Donna Doganiero Award The AIHA Safety Committee presents this award to the presenter of the best safety-related crossover education session at AIHce EXP. The award honors a truly outstanding individual whose achievements and vision continues to move the field of industrial hygiene and safety forward, Donna Doganiero, CIH, FAIHA. This year’s recipient is Steve Eversmeyer, CIH, CSP for FR Clothing Selection.

OEHS Career Professional Award This award is presented to an individual or individuals (up to two) who have made significant contributions to OEHS above and beyond their typical job responsibilities. This can include contributions in student development, mentoring, or early career guidance. Nominees must have demonstrated a commitment to promoting the profession of OEHS, advancing the profession among students and early career professionals, and/or providing guidance and mentorship to students or early-career professionals. This award is presented by the AIHA Academic Advisory Group and the AIHA Student and Early Career Professionals Committee. This year’s recipient is Georgi Popov, PhD, QEP, CSP, ARM, SMS, CMC, FAIHA.
John A. Leonowich Award This award is given by the AIHA Non-Ionizing Radiation Committee for educational excellence in nonionizing radiation, honors students who are actively pursuing NIR initiatives through research or education, and recognizes the achievements made by current students in advancing both theirs and the profession’s understanding of nonionizing radiation.
The Randy Ogle/Paul Baron Award This award is presented by the AIHA Nano and Advanced Materials Working Group to recognize excellence in a peer-reviewed article published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health (JOEH), which best advances knowledge and practice in our field. This award honors the work of Mr. Randy Ogle and Dr. Paul Baron who led the way in providing the management tools and data that laid the groundwork for future generations of EHS professionals working in the field of Nano Technology and Advanced Materials. The award goes to Gavin H. West, Fatima I. Castaneda, Leonard G. Burrelli, Daniel Dresser, Michael R. Cooper, Sara B. Brooks, and Bruce E. Lippy for the article Occupational Exposure Risk During Spraying of Biocidal Paint Containing Silver Nanoparticles published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene, volume 18, 2021, issue 6, pages 237-249, published online 14 May 2021.
Cultural Heritage Health and Safety Advocate Award The 2021 inaugural award is presented by the AIHA Museum and Cultural Heritage Working Group to Eryl P. Wentworth, former Executive Director of the American Institute for Conservation (AIC), whose significant work transformed the occupational health and safety landscape for the cultural heritage industry. Her emphasis on allied professional collaborations, including her 2016 proposal to establish a partnership between AIHA and AIC, led to the creation of the Museum and Cultural Heritage Industry Working Group. Her organizational support for the 30+ year old AIC Safety and Health Network resulted in AIC being a major resource for health and safety training, guidelines, and workshops for its members, many of whom are in private practice or small businesses. Ms. Wentworth ensured that AIHA senior leadership would be included on the Advisory Council and Steering Committee of the new 2020 Held in Trust Initiative between AIC’s Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities, thus guaranteeing the inclusion of safety and health into all aspects of the conservation and cultural heritage professions.
Margaret Samways Memorial Student Poster Award This award honors the memory of Margaret Samways, past chair and long-time member of the AIHA Communication and Training Methods Committee. The award will be given to the best student poster at AIHce that focuses on communication and training methods.
David L. Swift Award Memorial Award This award honors the memory of Dr. David L. Swift for his outstanding contributions to aerosol and industrial hygiene research. Aerosol research papers published during the previous year in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene are reviewed by the AIHA Aerosol Technology Committee.
Joselito Ignacio OEHS Emergency Preparedness and Response Award The Incident Preparedness and Response Working Group will evaluate posters and education sessions based on a scoring system including presentation, applicability to emergency response, and originality. Select workgroup members will review the conference agenda and identify candidate posters or educational sessions. The review workgroup scores criteria for each domain based on applicability to OEHS-related preparedness and response efforts.
Upton Sinclair Lecture Award The Upton Sinclair Memorial Lecture on EHS Investigative Reporting is hosted by the AIHA Social Concerns Committee. This year’s lecture, Hot Day: How Data and Documents Shined a Light on Heat’s Mounting Death Toll on Workers in the US will be delivered by Kristen Lombardi, Columbia Journalism School at AIHce EXP on Monday, May 23 at 3:15 p.m. CT. This lecture will walk conference attendees through the “Hot Days” investigation, outlining the main findings and providing a window into the labor-intensive reporting process.
John M. White Award The John M. White Award was established by the AIHA Respiratory Protection Committee to encourage scientific and application-oriented research in respiratory protection. This year’s award is presented to William G. Lindsley, Donald H. Beezhold, Jayme Coyle, Raymond C. Derk, Francoise M. Blachere, Theresa Boots, Jeffrey S. Reynolds, Walter G. McKinney, Erik Sinsel, and John D. Noti for the article Efficacy of Universal Masking for Source Control and Personal Protection from Simulated Cough and Exhaled Aerosols in a Room published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene, volume 18, 2021, issue 8, pages 409-422, published online: 21 July 2021.
Aileen Yankowski Outstanding Leader of the Year Award The Aileen Yankowski Outstanding Leader of the Year Award, presented by the AIHA Women in IH Committee, is awarded annually to an individual who, through volunteerism, supports the career development of professional women, promotes leadership skills and disseminates critical information relevant to women working in industrial hygiene. This year’s recipient is Nancy E. Wilk, HBSc, MHSc, CIH.
2021 AIHA Bestseller This award is presented to the editor(s) of the publication that sold the most copies during the year. The 2021 best seller is presented to Carter B. Ficklen, III, CIH, CSP for Industrial Hygiene Reference and Study Guide, 4th edition.
2021 Critics’ Choice Award The Critic’s Choice Award honors a publication completed in 2021. The Content Portfolio Advisory Group (CPAG) evaluates all publications and selects one to recognize for their impact on the profession, originality, and quality of writing. AIHA Local Section Awards The Jim D’Arcy JOEH Original Article Award The Michigan Industrial Hygiene Society (MIHS) Best Paper Award is awarded to the authors of an original article from the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene (JOEH). With the passing of long-time selection committee chair, Dr. Jim D’Arcy, in June 2021, MIHS renamed the award the Jim D’Arcy JOEH Original Article Award. This year’s award is presented to Ashley Newton, Karin Adams, PhD, CIH, Berrin Serdar, L.
