Students: AIHF Scholarship Application Available Now The American Industrial Hygiene Foundation is accepting scholarship applications for the 2021–2022 academic year. Students are evaluated on academic record, extracurricular activities, future goals as an industrial hygienist, and potential for leadership in the industrial hygiene profession. Several AIHF scholarships have specific criteria, and schools or students who meet those criteria will be given first consideration. All application materials must be submitted by Feb. 1, 2021. For more information on AIHF scholarships and eligibility requirements, please visit the foundation's website. There’s still time to give to AIHF and receive a tax deduction in 2020. Donating to AIHF will help ensure that deserving students preparing for careers in industrial hygiene can pursue their educational goals. Detailed information about making a donation or a pledge can be found online. Since 1982, AIHF has distributed more than $2 million in scholarship funds to students pursuing degrees in industrial hygiene or occupational and environmental health and safety. In Memoriam
Honorary AIHA member
William A. Burgess, CIH (Ret.),
passed away on Sept. 14 at the age of 96. He joined AIHA in 1955. In 1960, he became an associate professor of occupational health engineering at the Harvard School of Public Health. During more than 40 years at Harvard, he published two textbooks that became widely used:
Recognition of Health Hazards in Industry
and
Ventilation for Control of the Work Environment
. AIHA honored Burgess in 1983 with the Henry F. Smyth, Jr. Award, in 1986 with the Distinguished Service to AIHA Award, and in 1996 with the Donald E. Cummings Memorial Award. Read his obituary online.
David Edgar Hickish
, founding member and past president of the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS), passed away on Aug. 16. He was 95. According to BOHS, Hickish's connection to AIHA began in 1952, when he and fellow Englishman Peter Isaac attended the AIHA Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio, which inspired them to pursue forming a similar body in the U.K. Soon after, they approached Thomas Bedford of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine about forming a British society. When BOHS was founded in 1953, Bedford served as president, Isaac as honorary secretary, and Hickish as honorary treasurer.
