CSB Chair, Industry Group Issue Joint Statement on Preventive Maintenance
A joint statement issued in February by Vanessa Allen Sutherland, chair of the Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board, and Frank Reiner, president of the Chlorine Institute, urges owners and operators of chemical facilities to regularly assess their maintenance programs to ensure the plans remain relevant as technology within the chemical industry changes over time. The statement acknowledges that preventive maintenance “often fall[s] victim to the pressure of everyday operations and short-term budgeting concerns” and refers to recent high-profile accidents at chemical plants that resulted in part from deficient preventive maintenance. The statement encourages chemical facility owners and operators to work with industry groups such as the Chlorine Institute to improve their preventive maintenance practices. The Chlorine Institute is a trade association of companies involved in the production, distribution, or use of chlorine, sodium and potassium hydroxides and sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen chloride, and vinyl chloride monomer.
