SCHC Develops OSHA HazCom Training for School Employees
Earlier this year, the Society for Chemical Hazard Communication (SCHC) developed a presentation intended for training public school employees on OSHA’s hazard communication standard, HazCom 2012. The phase-in period for HazCom 2012 ended on June 1, 2016, the date by which employers were required to update their hazard communication program and workplace labeling, and train workers on any newly identified hazards. According to OSHA, HazCom 2012 applies to schools where staff use cleaning supplies or where faculty handle and store chemicals in laboratories. The purpose of the training is to familiarize school workers with HazCom 2012 and the new SDSs and labels they are seeing on the job.
SCHC’s presentation includes PowerPoint slides (PPTX), a hazard communication training script (PDF), and a follow-up quiz (PDF). The training presentation was developed by SCHC’s Outreach and Communication Committee through the society’s alliance with OSHA.
SCHC also has a library of HazCom 2012 information sheets, which cover topics such as SDSs, OSHA vs. GHS labeling, and pictograms, as well as hazards like flammable aerosols and organic peroxides. The sheets are available as PDFs near the bottom of SCHC’s OSHA alliance page.
