AIHA Recognizes Contributions of Retiring Board Members
AIHA welcomed its new Board of Directors and honored the contributions of Past President Daniel H. Anna, PhD, CIH, CSP, and Past Director Jennifer Sahmel, MPH, CIH, CSP, during its annual business meeting at AIHce EXP 2017 in Seattle, Wash.
Anna has been a passionate member of AIHA since 1991 and is a graduate of AIHA’s inaugural Future Leaders Institute, a program that provides attendees with the resources necessary to be successful leaders in the profession. He served as AIHA President in 2015–2016. While his time on the AIHA Board of Directors has come to an end, he remains active in AIHA as the editor of the forthcoming fourth edition of
The Occupational Environment: Its Evaluation, Control, and Management
, also known as “The White Book.”
Sahmel has been an active member of AIHA over the course of her career. She is a certified industrial hygienist and a certified safety professional with two decades of experience in human health risk assessment and workplace health and safety. She has won several awards for her dedication to the industrial hygiene field, including the AIHA Outstanding Group Contributor Award in 2013.
“We are grateful to both Dan and Jennifer for their time and commitment to serving AIHA, its members, and the industrial hygiene profession,” said Lawrence Sloan, CAE, AIHA’s CEO. “In order to protect workers and continue our mission, we need strong Board leadership. I have greatly enjoyed working alongside them and getting to know them.”

IH Professional Pathway™ Program Wins APEX Awards for Publication Excellence
AIHA will receive two APEX Awards for Publication Excellence for its IH Professional Pathway™ program, a comprehensive member outreach and public awareness program that was developed and launched by AIHA in 2016. The program won a Grand Award in the Electronic Media category and an Award of Excellence in the category for Campaigns, Programs & Plans – Membership & Customer.
AIHA collaborated on the IH Professional Pathway project with exceptional artists and designers, including Klaus Scherwinski, Luisa J. Preissler, and Simeon Cogswell. This recognition comes on the heels of four previous honors received by the program: two AVA Digital Awards, a MarCom Award, and a grant by the American Society of Association Executives.
The APEX Awards for Publication Excellence is an annual competition for publishers, editors, writers, and designers who create print, web, electronic, and social media. Business, nonprofit, agency, and freelance communicators can submit to APEX to win awards for their best writing, publications, campaigns, programs, design, and media. The event is sponsored by Communications Concepts, Inc., which advises professionals who write, edit, and manage business communications on best strategies and practices.
“The IH Professional Pathway program has truly been a labor of love for our entire marketing team,” said AIHA Marketing Manager Ben H. Rome, who spearheaded the multi-faceted outreach program with Sue Marchese, director of Communications and Marketing at AIHA. “We are very proud of its success and recognition and aim to continue building upon this momentum. Through this exposure, we hope to expand our efforts in promoting industrial hygiene and the crucial roles our members have in keeping workers safe.”
