Report Proposes Use of Emerging Science to Improve Risk-related Evaluations
A new report published by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine provides recommendations for incorporating new scientific approaches into risk-based evaluations. The report,
Using 21st Century Science to Improve Risk-Related Evaluations
, documents the evidence-based consensus of an authoring committee of experts convened by the National Academies at the request of several government agencies, including EPA, FDA, and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. During its deliberations, the committee considered scientific advances that occurred following the publication of two National Research Council reports on the future of the fields of toxicity testing and exposure science.
Topics discussed in the report include whether a new paradigm is needed for data validation, the integration of divergent data streams, how to characterize uncertainty, and how best to communicate new approaches so that various stakeholders are able to understand them.
