WorkSafe New Zealand Releases Guide for Managing, Removing Asbestos
WorkSafe New Zealand, the country’s occupational health and safety regulator, recently released new
guidance
for managing and removing asbestos in the workplace. The
Approved Code of Practice for the Management and Removal of Asbestos
, which applies to a range of people who are exposed to asbestos, is the first of its kind in New Zealand. According to WorkSafe’s press release, previous asbestos guidance in the country focused only on asbestos removal, whereas the new code is more comprehensive and covers all aspects of safely managing asbestos in New Zealand workplaces.
“The code sets out WorkSafe’s expectations for working safely with asbestos and is designed for businesses that manage or control workplaces, carry out asbestos removal or asbestos-related work, and licensed asbestos assessors,” the press release reads. “The code applies to landlords, too, but not to home occupants doing DIY.”
The code provides information on topics such as permitted types of work involving asbestos, the airborne contamination standard for asbestos and trace level, identifying and managing asbestos and asbestos-containing material in the workplace, personal protective equipment and health monitoring, and training. WorkSafe developed the new guidance in consultation with unions, employer organizations, and other stakeholders.
