CEC Gears Up for AIHce 2017
The AIHA Continuing Education Committee (CEC) met this November to review more than 90 professional development course (PDC) proposals for presentation at AIHce 2017. Each proposal undergoes a rigorous and competitive bi-level review by the CEC and experts from AIHA volunteer groups. This review helps guarantee that quality courses are presented to ensure an excellent educational experience.
More than 50 proposals were selected for presentation at AIHce 2017 in Seattle, Wash., on Saturday, June 3, Sunday, June 4, and Thursday, June 8. With benefits and value-added items ranging from hands-on demonstrations and workshops to e-handouts, essential publications, and software, the 2017 PDCs will provide practical skills and tools that attendees can apply immediately. In addition, PDC attendees earn extra certification maintenance points and network with experts.
Two New Documents Available from AIHA Volunteer Groups
Two new documents developed by AIHA volunteer groups were recently approved by the association’s Board of Directors.
A new fact sheet sponsored by the AIHA Healthcare Working Group Hazardous Drugs Project Team provides practical information on how to prepare chemotherapy hoods for disposal or recycle. The document covers topics such as risk assessment, deactivation, decontamination, cleaning and disinfecting, and wipe sampling. The fact sheet is available as a

Citing a need for manufacturers of real-time detection equipment to provide key performance characteristics for their instruments, the AIHA Real-Time Detection Systems Committee has published a manual that encourages manufacturers to adopt standardized definitions and methods related to instrument specifications. According to the committee, inconsistencies in the ways manufacturers describe instrument specifications can confuse users of the equipment and ultimately lead to increased risks to life and health. The manual, “Reporting Specifications for Electronic Real-time Gas and Vapor Detection Equipment,” can be downloaded as a

Nominations for Fellows Due This Month
The AIHA Nominating and Awards Committee requests nominations for the 2017 Fellow awards.
