NIOSH Updates List of Hazardous Drugs in Healthcare Settings
NIOSH has updated its
list of hazardous drugs in healthcare settings
, adding 34 drugs not found on the agency’s previous lists. For five of the newly listed hazardous drugs, manufacturers provide safe-handling warnings. The 2016 list, which was published last month, categorizes drugs into three groups: antineoplastic drugs, non-antineoplastic hazardous drugs, and drugs that primarily have adverse reproductive effects.
The NIOSH List of Antineoplastic and Other Hazardous Drugs in Healthcare Settings builds on a NIOSH alert from 2004 that warned healthcare employers and workers of the risks of working with hazardous drugs and discussed measures they could take to protect their health. The 2004 list of hazardous drugs was previously updated in 2010, 2012, and in 2014, when 27 new drugs were added.
