AIHA NEWS AND NOTES
Bring the Message of OHS to Young
Workers
The Safety Matters
program, developed by AIHA and NIOSH, is intended to raise awareness among young workers about workplace safety and health. Safety Matters
is a one-hour interactive teaching module and PowerPoint presentation targeted to students in grades 7 through 12. The module is intended to help young people build the skills and knowledge they need to participate in safe and healthy work environments throughout their working lives. The program covers topics such as identifying hazards at work, preventing injury and illness, identifying emergencies at work and deciding on the best ways to address them, and communicating with others—including people in authority—when young workers feel unsafe or threatened.

Chinese Delegation Visits AIHA
A 25-member delegation from China’s State Administration of Work Safety (SAWS) visited the AIHA office in Falls Church, Va., on Aug. 31 to learn about the association’s latest initiatives, upcoming educational events, and other aspects of AIHA’s program of work. The delegation had expressed interest in understanding how AIHA helps members keep their knowledge of health and safety topics and regulations up to date. AIHA staff gave presentations on the role of professional associations in the United States, AIHA periodicals, AIHA’s registry and proficiency analytical testing programs, and the AIHA Laboratory Accreditation Program.
SAWS is the state agency responsible for monitoring the sanitation of China’s workplaces, designing standards and regulations related to occupational health, investigating illegal behaviors and threats related to occupational health, and arranging training on occupational safety.
