New Report Outlines Decision Framework for Selecting Alternative Chemicals
A new report published by the National Academies Press details a 13-step framework for evaluating potentially safer substitutes for chemicals of concern. “A Framework to Guide Selection of Chemical Alternatives” is intended for use by the chemical industry, environmentalists, ecologists, and state and local governments. Through case studies, the report illustrates how different users can apply the framework in various contexts. The framework incorporates hazard assessments and steps for considering the possible effects of a chemical throughout its life cycle. Readers will also find a discussion of the ways that modern information sources like computational modeling can supplement traditional toxicology data during the assessment process.
