SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS
New Edition of
Manual of Analytical MethodsReleased
NIOSH recently released the 5th edition of the
NIOSH Manual of Analytical Methods(NMAM), a collection of methods for sampling and analysis of contaminants in workplace air, and in the blood and urine of workers who are occupationally exposed. The new edition, which is the first electronic-only version of the publication, includes 57 methods, six of which are new biomonitoring methods. The 5th edition of NMAM also includes new or updated chapters on factors affecting aerosol sampling, measurement of fibers, monitoring diesel particulate exhaust in the workplace, and more.
The electronic-only format allows for updates as NIOSH adds new methods and guidance. However, users will still be able to print copies of the methods as PDFs. “We are continually keeping track of new developments in industrial hygiene and biomonitoring methods, as well as consensus standards,” said NIOSH Director Dr. John Howard. “The
NIOSH Manual of Analytical Methodsremains an invaluable global resource for occupational safety and health professionals.”
As NIOSH prepared to develop the new edition of NMAM in late 2013, the agency surveyed AIHA members to ensure that the publication better meets the needs of users. NIOSH has published methods developed in cooperating laboratories, and the performance of these methods was evaluated using established experimental protocols. According to the agency, the methods were selected based on priorities established in a joint NIOSH/AIHA survey of participating laboratories.
