Revised Standard Addresses Hydrogen Sulfide Training Programs
A recently revised standard sets forth accepted practices for hydrogen sulfide (H2S) safety training and instruction of affected personnel. ANSI/ASSE Z390.1-2017,
Accepted Practices for Hydrogen Sulfide Training Programs
, is intended to help organizations with potential H2S exposure put training in place to protect workers.
The standard covers topics such as recommended exercises and drills, properties and characteristics of H2S, sources of H2S and areas of potential exposure, detection methods for H2S, and engineering controls. Also included in the standard are sections on the properties, characteristics, and safe work practices for sulfur dioxide (SO2); the selection, use, and care of personal protective equipment appropriate for atmospheres containing H2S concentrations above occupational exposure limits; and rescue techniques and first aid procedures for victims of H2S exposure. A sample certification course outline can be found in the standard’s appendices.
