AIHA Wins Two AVA Digital Awards AIHA will receive two AVA Digital Awards through the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals (AMCP) for its IH Professional Pathway™ program, a comprehensive member outreach and public awareness program that the association developed and launched in 2016. AIHA has collaborated on the project with exceptional artists and designers, including Fifth Story Productions, Klaus Scherwinski, Luisa J. Preissler, and Simeon Cogswell. The IH Professional Pathway program won Gold in the animation category and Platinum in the category for digital marketing campaigns. Honors like these provide international exposure that will allow AIHA to expand the program and its outreach efforts to an even greater number of potential industrial hygiene students.
The AVA Digital Awards is an international competition that recognizes outstanding work by creative professionals involved in the concept, direction, design, and production of media that is part of the evolution of digital communication. The competition is administered and judged by AMCP, an international organization of several thousand production, marketing, communication, advertising, public relations, and freelance professionals.
“We are very proud of the IH Professional Pathway program’s success thus far,” said AIHA Marketing Manager Ben H. Rome. “Through this exposure, we can expand our reach in promoting the field of industrial hygiene and the critical role these professionals have in keeping workers safe.”
AIHA Accolades AIHA members Allan Ader, PhD, DABT, and Robert Sussman, PhD, DABT, have been appointed as managing directors of SafeBridge Consultants, an occupational health and safety consulting firm to the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and fine chemical industry. Ader and Sussman succeed fellow AIHA member John Farris, CIH, the firm’s founding president and CEO, following his retirement.
In January, Walter Jones became director of the occupational safety and health division of the Laborers' Health and Safety Fund of North America (LHSFNA). Jones, who previously served as the division's associate director, fills the role of Scott Schneider, CIH, who recently retired from the position.
Congratulations to NIOSH research toxicologist John Snawder, who was recently recognized for his outstanding leadership by the National Service, Transmission, Exploration and Production Safety (STEPS) Network, which promotes safety, health, and environmental improvement in the exploration and production of oil and gas in U.S. onshore operations. New Director of Government Relations Holds Town Hall Call In January, AIHA’s new director of Government Relations, Mark Ames, shared his strategic priorities for the association during a 40-minute town hall conference call with volunteer and local section leaders. In addition to introducing himself, Ames addressed questions about increasing the awareness and visibility of the IH/OH profession at the state and federal levels; the concerns of IH/OH professionals regarding the inadequate funding of IH/OH research at the state and local levels; and what government affairs can do to assist those in academia with educating their representatives on the importance of supporting IH/OH-related education and programs.
A recording of the town hall is available online. A registration form will appear on the webpage, but only your name is required to access the recording. New Interactive “Body of Knowledge” Available An interactive version of AIHA's Body of Knowledge (BoK) on business value presentation is now available. AIHA, with a group of members and volunteers, worked collaboratively to develop the technical framework, or BoK, which outlines the knowledge and skills a competent person should possess and be able to demonstrate when presenting a business case for interventions to reduce or eliminate adverse exposures. View the new interactive BoK on AIHA’s website. Subscribe to SynergistNOW The SynergistNOW blog, which launched in May 2016, recently featured posts on science communication and the deficit model; AIHA’s efforts to increase public awareness about the importance of industrial hygiene; and the association’s recent government relations activities. SynergistNOW is written by and for experienced IH/OHs, researchers, academics, and AIHA leaders. The blog is available to everyone with an interest in the IH and OEHS fields, and AIHA members and nonmembers alike can subscribe to receive weekly blog updates via email.
