NIOSH Debunks Myths of Respiratory Protection in Healthcare
A new “workplace solutions” document from NIOSH explores several common myths related to respiratory protection in healthcare. NIOSH developed the document in response to evidence that hospitals and healthcare workers are not in full compliance with recommended practices for respiratory protection. Healthcare workers face an increased risk of exposure to infectious respiratory illnesses when respiratory protective devices (RPDs) are not used properly. The document addresses these and other myths regarding respiratory protection in healthcare: that respirators and surgical masks provide the same type and level of protection for the user; that all N95 respirators offer the same fit and level of protection; and that a “good fit” is good enough. The document also provides information on the proper use of RPDs and the responsibilities of respiratory protection program administrators to ensure preparedness for future public health emergencies and in day-to-day practice. View the document on NIOSH’s website.
