Guidance Recommends Approach for Minimizing Nanomaterials Exposure
Updated guidance published by Quebec-based research organization IRSST recommends a preventive approach designed to minimize occupational exposure to nanomaterials. The suggested approach described in the second edition of “Best Practices Guidance for Nanomaterial Risk Management in the Workplace” is designed to reduce nanomaterial emissions in a variety of work environments, including research laboratories, plants that synthesize nanomaterials, and plants that incorporate nanomaterials into products to improve their properties. The document also discusses reduction of nanomaterial emissions in workplaces where mechanical operations are performed on composites that include nanomaterials and generate dust containing nanomaterials. The second edition includes appendices that describe examples of at-risk situations; preventive measures and data on their relative efficacy; and the implementation of measures to control exposure. The guide is intended to help stakeholders in laboratories and industry in developing and monitoring prevention programs. Download the guide from IRSST’s website.
